FACEBOOK'S DISINFORMATION DOZEN ARE FLOURISHING ACROSS SOCIAL MEDIA

WASHINGTON, DC.- All except two of the twelve social media personalities dubbed the " Disinformation Dozen" are still active on at least one of the major platforms on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, and boast a combined six million followers.
The dozen were named by The Center for Countering Digital Hate as those intentionally peddling the most viral false information about vaccines and covid-19 online, in a study released in March, 2021 and later cited by The Biden Administration.
The Center for Countering Digital Hate urged social media companies to shut down accounts linked to the twelve but, despite several being removed, a majority are still active. As of July 25, 2021 accounts linked to the dozen still had a combined 520,000 followers on Instagram, 830,000 on Twitter, and 4.7 million on Facebook.
Reason may be that the content they share may have changed. Two of the three most popular of the dozen appear to have stepped away from posting covid and vaccines in recent months, after being hit with suspensions or a ban on smaller accounts.
Facebook says it has acted already, but pressure remains on them to act more decisively and absolutely in response to disinformation.
