West Orange Man Charged In Shooting

WEST ORANGE MAN TO FACE CHARGES IN CONNECTION WITH ROXBURY SHOOTING

     " A West Orange Man Has Been Charged With Offenses In Monday's Shooting In Roxbury Township."

ROXBURY, NJ.- Acting Morris County Prosecutor Robert J. Carroll, Chief of Detectives Chris Kimker, Morris County Sheriff James Gannon, and Roxbury Police Chief Marc Palanchi announce the arrest of Michael Mecca, 39, of West Orange, New Jersey in connection with a shooting that occurred on Monday, May 31, 2021.



     It is alleged that on the night of May 31st, Michael Mecca argued with the victim, at which point he left the location of the argument, and then returned a short time later with a handgun. Following an altercation between Mecca and the victim, it has been alleged that Mecca pulled a .40 caliber handgun from his waistband and fired at the victim, striking the victim several times in the leg. Mecca then fled the scene.


     The victim was transported to a area hospital, and was treated for non-life threatening injuries, and is expected to make a full recovery. The firearm alleged to been used in the shooting was recovered in the area a shortly after the incident.


     Mecca surrendered to Law Enforcement Officials on Tuesday, June 1, 2021.


     Mecca has been charged with Second Degree Aggravated Assault, Second Degree Unlawful Possession Of A Weapon, and Second Degree Possession Of A Weapon For Unlawful Purpose in connection with the incident. Mecca was taken into custody, pending his first court appearance. 


     Members of The Roxbury Police Department, The Morris County Sheriff's Office- Crime Scene Investigation Unit, and The Morris County Prosecutor's Office Major Crimes Unit, all participated in the investigation.


" The Rules Of The Court Require Us To Include A Statement, Which States: The Charges Are Merely Accusations And The Defendant And Or Defendants Are Presumed Innocent Unless And Until Proven Guilty, Beyond A Reasonable Doubt."
