 PATERSON POLICE OFFICER CHARGES IN CONNECTION WITH MAY 26th INCIDENT

     " County Prosecutor Has Charged Paterson Police Officer With Aggravated Assault & Official Misconduct."

PATERSON, NJ.- On Friday, June 11, 2021, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes announced the arrest of Spencer Finch, 44, of Mahwah, New Jersey.

     Finch is charged by way of complaint with One Count of Second Degree Official Misconduct; One Count of Second Degree Aggravated Assault; One Count of Third Degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose; and One Count of Tampering With Public Records or Information. 

     Official Misconduct and Aggravated Assault each carry a maximum term of Ten Years in New Jersey State Prison. Possession of a Weapon and Tampering With Public Records or Information each carry a term of Five Years in New Jersey State Prison. 

     It is alleged on May 26, 2021, Finch, a Paterson Police Officer, committed Aggravated Assault by striking the victim in the face with his hand, hitting the victim multiple times with a flashlight, and knee the victim in the face. The Aggravated Assault took place while Finch was on-duty and in uniform. Finch then prepared, signed, and submitted a police report describing the incident that contained several false statements.

     A first appearance will be held virtually tomorrow at The Passaic County Central Judicial Processing Court, and the State intends to file a motion for pre-trial detention which will be heard virtually before the Honorable Scott Rumana, J.S.C., on Wednesday, June 16, 2021.

" The Rules Of The Court Require Us To Include A Statement, Which States: The Charges Are Merely Accusations And The Defendant And Or Defendants Are Presumed Innocent Unless And Until Proven Guilty Beyond A Reasonable Doubt."
