VANDALS TARGET STATUE OF GEORGE FLOYD ONE WEEK AFTER THE UNVEILING ON THE STEPS OF NEWARK CITY HALL

NEWARK, NJ.- Newark Authorities are searching for suspects in connection with vandalism to the recently unveiled Statue of George Floyd, on the steps of Newark City Hall.
Shortly before 6:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 24, 2021, a member of The Newark Police Department discovered that The Statue of George Floyd a Minneapolis Minnesota resident who was killed by Minneapolis Police in May 2020.
The Statue which was unveiled on Wednesday June 16, 2021, was targeted by vandals just one week after the ceremony to remember the tragic death of Mr. Floyd.
The statue of Mr. Floyd seated on a bench, was targeted by vandals who spray painted the face black, and on the torso section with white spray paint wrote the words, " Life, Liberty, Victory, and Patriot Front U.S." a Large Sticker displaying White Supremacy Lingo was also placed on the Statue.
On Saturday June 19, 2021, hundreds of people gathered on the steps of Newark City Hall in a formal celebration of the Federal Recognition of Juneteenth as a Federal Holiday, in conjunction with the unveiling of the Statue of George Floyd.
Newark Department of Building and Grounds employees were able to remove the graffiti from the Statue.
The overnight target vandalism of the Statue is being investigated by The Newark Police Department, and comes just two days before Former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin is scheduled to be Sentenced in the Death of George Floyd.
