Brick Township Woman Indicted

 A BRICK TOWNSHIP, NEW JERSEY WOMAN HAS BEEN INDICTED IN CONNECTION WITH A MAY, 2020 HOMICIDE

     " Mayra Gavilanez-Alectus Of Brick Township, New Jersey Has Been Indicted On Murder & Weapons Offenses In Connection With May 17, 2020 Homicide."

BRICK TOWNSHIP, NJ.- On Wednesday, June 30, 2021, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer announced that on Wednesday, June 30, 2021, Mayra Gavilanez-Alectus, 49, of Brick Township, New Jersey, was Indicted by a Grand Jury sitting in Ocean County on a charge of Murder, in connection with the death of Rebecca Gavilanez-Alectus, in Brick Township, New Jersey, on May 17, 2021. 



     Mayra Gavilanez-Alectus was also Indicted on charges of Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon.


     On May 17, 2021, members of Brick Township Police Department, responded to a residence on Creek Road for a report of an unresponsive female. Upon arrival, Police Officers found the lifeless body of Rebecca Gavilanez-Alectus in an upstairs bedroom of the residence. On May 18, 2020, The Ocean County Medical Examiner performed a post-mortem examination of Ms. Gavilanez-Alectus' body, and determined that the manner of her death to be a Homicide.



     A subsequent investigation by The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office Major Crime Unit, The Brick Township Police Department Detective Bureau, and The Ocean County Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit revealed that both the victim and the defendant resided at the Creek Road address. 


     The investigation further revealed that a Cylindrical Container used for the purpose of chilling wine was utilized in the commission of the Murder. The injuries sustained by Rebecca Gavilanez-Alectus were consistent with the implementation of this death. On May 18, 2020, a warrant for the arrest of Mayra Gavilanez-Alectus was issued. On May 21, 2020, Mayra Gavilanez-Alectus was taken into custody in Houston, Texas. She was extradited back to New Jersey, and has been lodged in The Ocean County Jail since her return to New Jersey.


     Ocean County Prosecutor would like to acknowledge the diligent efforts of Law Enforcement Agencies  and Assistant Prosecutors that participated in the investigation, arrest and the securing of an indictment in this case.


" The Rules Of The Court Require Us To Include A Statement, Which States: The Charges Are Merely Accusations And The Defendant And Or Defendants Are Presumed Innocent Unless And Until Proven Guilty Beyond Reasonable Doubt."
