The Recent Rise In Crime.

NEW YORK CITY TO LOS ANGELES, NATIONWIDE THE RECENT RISE IN CRIME HAS LEFT MANY WORRIED.

" With The Recent Increase In Crime, Leave Many To Believe That 2021 May Experience The Worst Year In History."

May 10, 2021 By: Kevin Peterson & Art Fletcher, With Leonard Madison, Reporting For Englebrook Independent News.

Whether from the pandemic, economic hardships, substance abuse, social injustice or whatever it maybe. We need to blame our elected officials for the current discord they have created in recent years. Now today in 2021, it has become evermore apparent we are heading towards a path, where we are no longer safe on our city streets and in our homes.

For the month of April, 2021 the overall crime index in New York City rose 30.4% compared with April, 2020. Violent crime also increased as well. Felony assaults increased by 35.6%, 1,630 v 1,202 in April, 2020. Shootings incidents increased to 149 v 56 in April, 2020, an overall increase of 166.1%.

In Chicago the monthly crime statistic report released on Thursday April 1, 2021, revealed that homicides increased by 33%, over the same period last year. Shooting incidents also increased by 43% over the same period last year.

Portland, Oregon the homicide rate overall increased by 1900% in 2020, from 2019. Portland already had 20 homicides and 208 shootings as of March 1, 2021. Last year, however, there was just 1 homicide during the same 3-month period. Portland is averaging two homicides per-week in 2021.

In Los Angeles, the homicide rate continues to climb. In the first quarter homicides increased by 46%, higher than the same time in 2020. From January 1 through March 31, 2021 Los Angeles had 92 homicides, compared to 63 during the same time period in 2020. The spike in homicides, unsurprisingly accompanies a surge in shootings. From January 1, through April 24, 2021, the Los Angeles Police Department recorded 1,025 reports of shots fired, a 65% increase over the same timeframe last year.

For a country that was founded on The Rule of Law, many of us are wondering why this surge in crime is taking place. The recent rhetoric from Congressional leaders and local mayors to defund or even abolish  police departments, due to incidents of unprovoked police shootings.

In New York City, Mayor Bill de Blasio and Council Speaker Corey Johnson, agreed in principle to cut $1 billion from the The New York City Police Department ( NYPD) shifting the funds to Youth and Social Services. The announcement came after 10 days of rioting in the city, in the wake of the murder of George Floyd at hands of Minneapolis Police Office Derek Chauvin, who later was convicted of murder.

Portland City Council voted and approved the 2020-2021 budget  3-1 on Wednesday June 17, 2020, which included a  $15 million in funding cuts to the Portland Police Bureau. As in New York these funds were redirected to Social Service Departments. The cuts lead to increased crime and continued unrest in the city.

On November 7, 2020, Los Angeles Police Department budget will be cut by $150 million, the decision triggered by widespread protests. These cuts have compelled LAPD over the past months to move a total of 234 back into patrol, reduce desk hours at their stations, cut special deployments and stop staffing teams that cover homeless issues. Not only has crime rates throughout the city increased, but city also so an increase to the homeless population and related homeless on homeless crime rise.

The increase in crime, throughout the nation must be addressed immediately. With the New York City shooting over this weekend in Times Square of three bystanders including a four year old girl. Then early Sunday morning a gunman kills six people in Colorado, before taking his own life. Each day shootings across america are increasing at an alarming rate.

Whatever the cause, onething is clear, the rhetoric from the progressive left in congress in their quest to abolish  Police Departments is not the answer. We must work together to support our Police Officers and hold rogue officers accountable for their actions. Officers that commit crimes and exceed their training guidelines, should be brought to justices swiftly, the withholding of bodycam footage is not acceptable.

Today, as crime rises we need our police to protect us, and if some break laws they to must be held accountable, but until both civilians and officers learn to respect each other and understand that at times we may both be having a bad day. There will never be harmony in society, and crime will continue to increase.
