FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP POLICE LIEUTENANT ADMITS GUILT IN ACCESSING CRIMINAL DATABASE

" John Todd Pleaded Guilty On Friday Third Degree Computer Theft For Passing Criminal Database Information To Third Party."

FREEHOLD, NJ.- On Friday, September 16, 2022, Acting Monmouth County Prosecutor Lori Linskey announced that on Friday, a 27-Year Veteran of The Freehold Township Police Department has admitted to illegally using information from a Police Database for his personal use.

Lieutenant John Todd, 58, Pleaded Guilty to One Count of Third Degree Computer Theft on Friday, September 16, 2022 in Monmouth County State Superior Court.

Under the terms of the Plea Agreement, Mr. Todd will permanently forfeit Public Employment in The State of New Jersey. Todd will receive a term of Probation, and pay approximately $1,000.00 in Fines. Mr. Todd will also be allowed to enroll into The Pretrial Intervention Program for First Time Offenders. If Mr. Todd had proceeded to Trial and was Convicted, he would have faced up to Five Years in New Jersey State Prison.

An investigation conducted by The Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office determined that on February 23, 2022, Todd contacted a Police Department Dispatcher and asked the Dispatcher to run a Criminal Background Check on an individual from The Criminal Justice System Database, a system that only Law Enforcement Personnel are allowed to use. Mr. Todd then passed the information along to a Third Party, who was not a Law Enforcement Official.

" Regardless of rank, there is no place within law enforcement for conduct such as this," Acting Prosecutor Linskey said. "The vast majority of officers countrywide routinely serve the public with integrity and honor, risking their own lives on the job every single day. Actions such as those of Lt. Todd unfortunately make the work they do all the more challenging, particularly when it comes to gaining and maintaining the trust and respect of the citizens who depend on them."
