BURLINGTON COUNTY GRAND JURY INDICTS 18 YEAR OLD PEMBERTON MAN IN THE SHOOTING DEATH OF A TEEN
" Kai Johnson Indicted On Murder, Attempted Murder & Weapons Offenses With Fatal Shooting Of Malachi Treherne & Injuring Another."

MOUNT HOLLY, NJ.- On Wednesday, February 2, 2022 Burlington County Prosecutor Scott Coffina announced that a Grand Jury sitting in Burlington County has Returned an Indictment against an 18-Year-Old Pemberton Township man for Fatally Shooting a 17-Year-Old Male and Wounding a 17-Year-Old Female last year in Browns Mills, New Jersey.
The Indictment Charges Kai Johnson with First Degree Murder; First Degree Attempted Murder; Second Degree Aggravated Assault; Second Degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon; Second Degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose; and Third Degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child.
The indictment was returned on Tuesday, February 1, 2022 and signed by Prosecutor Coffina. An arraignment will be scheduled in the upcoming weeks in Burlington County Superior Court Superior Court. Mr. Johnson has been lodged in The Burlington County Jail in Mount Holly, New Jersey since surrendering to police three days after the Shootings.
The investigation began October 18, 2021, after Members of The Pemberton Township Police Department responded to a report of a shooting at approximately 11:30 p.m.
Upon arrival, Police Officers found Malachi Treherne, 17, of Pemberton Township, lying in the doorway of the residence. Malachi was pronounced deceased at the scene. The 17-Year-Old Female, who had been shot in the chest, was immediately transported to Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton, New Jersey and has since been released.
The investigation determined that Mr. Johnson and Malachi were having an argument inside the house at which time Mr. Johnson pulled out a gun and Shot both victims. An autopsy determined that Malachi Treherne died as a result of two gunshot wounds to his head.
